Glitter and Grain: Newcastle’s Underground LGBTQ+ Club Scene Through a Vintage Lens
Disco, Film, and Fierce Expression: Capturing Spectrum’s LGBTQIA+ Club Culture through 35mm film.
Newcastle’s nightlife thrives on diversity, music, and self-expression, and Spectrum embodied this spirit like no other. Held at Zerox on Newcastle’s Quayside, my monthly club night celebrated LGBTQIA+ creativity and conceptual fashion. As an event photographer in Newcastle and Gateshead, I wanted to have fun with this project; leaving everything I knew about what makes a “perfect” image on the other side of a tinsel curtain. I swapped my mirrorless camera for a £15 point and shoot 35mm camera in the hopes I would create magic capturing bold outfits, raw energy, and pure joy.
Why Film Photography?
Choosing film over digital gave Spectrum’s photos a nostalgic, authentic feel. Unlike instant digital shots, film demands patience and an eye for composition and lighting. The grain, color depth, and imperfections added texture, making each image a timeless snapshot of queer nightlife. As an experienced Newcastle and North East event photographer, I focused on capturing the energy and atmosphere of club culture through a unique lens.
Challenges of Club Photography
Shooting on film in a fast-paced, low-light club was an exciting challenge. Using high ISO film stocks, I maximized ambient light while preserving detail. With a limited number of frames per roll, every shot had to count—capturing movement, interactions, and fleeting expressions that defined the night. If you’re looking for professional event photography in Newcastle, Gateshead, or across the North East, working with a photographer who understands dynamic nightlife settings is key.
The Magic of Themed Nights
Each month, Spectrum transformed into an immersive art piece, with themes like Glitterball, Denim, Safari and Monochrome. Attendees became part of the experience, pushing fashion boundaries and embracing self-expression. From glitter-drenched dancers under strobe lights to denim-clad rebels exuding 90s grunge, every frame told a story of confidence and celebration.
Pride, Visibility, and the Power of Photography
Events like Spectrum go beyond just nightlife—they are essential spaces for queer visibility, self-expression, and community building. In a world where LGBTQIA+ spaces still face challenges, it’s crucial to document these moments and preserve the joy, resilience, and artistry of our community. Pride isn’t just an annual event; it’s a movement that lives in clubs, dance floors, and everyday acts of self-expression. Through LGBTQIA+ event photography, I aim to shine a light on these spaces and ensure that queer culture is seen, celebrated, and remembered.
Capturing the Energy of Newcastle’s LGBTQIA+ Nightlife
As an event photographer in Newcastle, Gateshead, and across the North East, my goal is to capture moments beyond posed shots—highlighting the movement, atmosphere, and raw emotion of nightlife. Shooting Spectrum reinforced my passion for documenting queer spaces through analogue photography. Whether you’re hosting a corporate event, live music gig, or LGBTQIA+ club night, I provide high-quality event photography that tells a compelling visual story.
Looking Ahead
After a year of Spectrum, I’ve built a visual time capsule of Newcastle’s LGBTQIA+ nightlife, preserving its creativity and community. Though the event has ended, its impact lives on in film, memories, and the connections it fostered.
